Texas National Guard Member Involved in Cross-Border Shooting
A Texas Army National Guard member reportedly discharged his weapon during a border-related incident in South El Paso, resulting in a 22-year-old Mexican man being shot in the leg. The incident is currently under investigation by the Texas Military Department (TMD) and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The victim, from Veracruz, Mexico, claimed he was shot from the U.S. side while working out along the border. The Border Network of Human Rights (BNHR) has called for a U.S. Department of Justice investigation, the removal of all Texas National Guard troops and DPS troopers from border communities, and an end to Governor Greg Abbott's Operation Lone Star. This initiative, launched by Abbott in March 2021, involves sending DPS troopers and National Guard members to the border to prevent migrant smuggling and drug trafficking. Abbott blames the Biden administration for the border "crisis" and asserts that Texas has the constitutional authority to secure its border with Mexico.
