Drug Cartels Isolate Towns in Chiapas, Cut Off Essential Services
Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged that drug cartel turf wars have isolated several towns in the state of Chiapas, near the Guatemala border. These cartels have cut off electrical power and prevented government workers from entering the area to restore services. The region is not only a hub for drug smuggling from Central America but also a critical route for human smuggling into the U.S. The local Roman Catholic Diocese reported forced recruitments and blockades by cartels, leading to shortages of basic goods. The Sinaloa cartel and the Jalisco New Generation cartel are reportedly fighting for control of this strategically important area.
