Juan Gabriel Montes Sermeño, known as "El Sierra" and alleged former regional leader of the Gulf Cartel in Tamaulipas, was fatally shot with at least four rounds to the head outside a hotel in Querétaro. The assailant ambushed Sermeño as he left the Hotel Real de la Peña and fled to an unknown location. Sermeño was declared dead at the scene from the gunshot wounds. No arrests have been made, but evidence including video footage and ballistic data is being compiled for the ongoing investigation. This incident may be linked to the same individual apprehended by the Navy in Guadalajara in September 2012.
