In a shocking act of violence, cartel gunmen ambushed and killed 13 police officers in the coastal state of Guerrero, Mexico. Among the victims were Public Security Secretary Alfredo Alonso Benitez and 12 officers and top aides. The ambush occurred in the municipality of Coyuca, near the tourist destinations of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo. The officers were targeted while patrolling the region near the town of El Papayo. Several officers were taken captive and later executed. This horrific event occurs amid an ongoing battle for control over lucrative drug trafficking routes and drug production areas in the region. Despite these circumstances, Guerrero's Governor Evelyn Salgado has claimed a decrease in crime in the state and has not commented on the mass killing.
