Tijuana Mayor Relocates to Mexican Army Base Amid Cartel Threats
Montserrat Caballero, the mayor of Tijuana, a Mexican border city, announced her decision to move to a local Mexican Army base due to numerous threats from cartels. This decision came in the wake of her assertive law enforcement actions that reportedly angered 56 individuals recognized by the Mexican government as "violence generators" - violent cartel commanders. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed that Caballero, who belongs to his political party, has been under federal protection for the past 15 days following these threats. The city of Tijuana continues to experience significant violence due to ongoing turf wars between cartels, primarily the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Cartel Gunmen Assault Police Officers with Paddle in Mexico
A group of gunmen in the southern part of Mexico's coastal state, Quintana Roo, managed to overpower two state police officers, intimidate them, and then severely beat them with a wooden paddle, demonstrating blatant impunity. Local officials tried to deny the occurrence of this incident. The beaten officers, identified only as J.A.V. and J.C., were part of a patrol unit surveilling the rural areas of the state when they were ambushed and kidnapped by the armed group. The attackers used the wooden paddle, a frequently employed instrument of punishment by Mexican drug cartels, to brutalize the officers on their legs and buttocks before releasing them. Quintana Roo has witnessed an alarming escalation in violence in recent years, as both the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel vie for control over drug trafficking routes and local drug distribution in popular tourist destinations like Cancun and Playa Del Carmen.
